September 2010 Assignment: Street Scenes

Posted on September 2, 2010 in: Assignments, Featured

Our September Assignment is called “Street Scenes”. What we see in day to day life provides great subject matter for our photography. And when traveling, taking street photos can sometimes really provide a view of the culture and flavor of the area we are visiting. Read on for the details and goals of this month’s assignment contest!

Many famous photographers have made street photography their art form (a great link to famous street and urban photographers http://www.urban-photography-art.com/famous-photographers.html) Some things to think about when filming street scenes include:

  • Lighting – where is the sun – is it falling on your subject, behind your
subject, causing lens flare? If you move, can you improve the lighting on your
    subject?
  • Composition – Look at where your subject is in the frame of your picture. Try to avoid “dead center” and see how including space or additional subject matter can improve your composition. Or if using “dead center” make your image strong.
  • Story – a picture that tells a story draws the viewer into the scene.

Not sure when you can get out there and shoot street scenes? Well the club
photo shoot is a photo walk, so what better place to start?
